Music Therapy

Music Therapy is neurologically based and backed by more than 10 years of research at TIRR Memorial Hermann.

A music therapist's role is to address the cognitive, speech/language, physical, and psychosocial needs of a patient, using Neurologic Music Therapy techniques.

Music therapy is often requested to co-treat with other therapies, such as physical or speech therapy, and to facilitate functional movements and/or cognitive and speech behaviors.

The many benefits of music therapy include:

• Rhythmic stimulation to normalize a patient's gait cadence, velocity and stride length when used with physical therapy
• Address verbal expression when co-treating with speech therapists
• Address coping and adjusting issues using song writing and lyric analysis
• Use music as a mnemonic cue in orientation and learning strategies for memory deficits

At TIRR Memorial Hermann, music therapists maintain the following qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in music therapy
• Passed the National Board Certification Exam for Music Therapists
• Trained and certified in Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)
