Our program is dedicated to providing the highest quality and most comprehensive neurological care to west Houston.

The collaborative group of affiliated neurologists, neuro intensivists, neurosurgeons, pain management specialists and highly trained neuroscience nursing staff provide leading-edge care for a broad range of neurological disorders and conditions. Patients benefit from inpatient and outpatient services, specialized care for complex conditions, advanced technology, and innovative therapies and techniques. Additionally, the program’s holistic approach ensures that each patient receives highly individualized and personalized care.

Memorial Hermann Memorial City also offers minimally invasive treatment options for patients with a variety of complex cerebrovascular disorders and conditions including aneurysms, stroke, arteriovenous malformations, and subarachnoid and intracranial hemorrhage. Fellowship trained neurosurgeons and interventionalist neurologists affiliated with UT Health Neurosciences, offer a full spectrum of endovascular services from diagnostic angiography to endovascular surgery.

General Neuroscience Services

Conditions treated at Memorial Hermann Memorial City include:

  • Stroke, including patients that could benefit from intra-arterial thrombolysis or other surgical interventions
  • Aneurysm, including those requiring surgical interventions such as stents or coilings
  • Acute head, neck and spine trauma, which may include hemorrhages, concussions, swelling, brain herniation, spinal disk herniation, complete or partial spinal cord injuries, skull fractures, and other types of traumatic injuries resulting from car accidents, slips and falls, etc.
  • Seizure, epilepsy and status epilepticus
  • Infection of the central nervous system, including meningitis.
  • Benign and malignant brain and spinal tumors
  • Surgical interventions including spinal reconstruction, spinal fusions and minimally invasive spine surgery
  • Neurological conditions including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, neuromuscular disorders including Guillain Barré Syndrome and Myasthenia Gravis, and peripheral nerve disorders

Inpatient Neurological Care

Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit

Memorial Hermann Memorial City houses the only dedicated Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (Neuro-ICU) in west Houston. It is staffed 24/7 by intensivists affiliated with UTHealth Neurosciences, all of whom are fellowship trained in neurocritical care. For patients who have suffered from stroke or severe neurological illness or have undergone neurosurgery, care in a dedicated Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit may provide improved neurological outcomes and reduce risk of long term complications.

Neuroscience Acute Care Unit

In the Neuroscience Acute Care unit, patients have 24-hour access to highly trained inpatient neurologists and care delivery by highly skilled nursing staff, many whom are Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurses and Stroke Certified Registered Nurses.

A rapid-response nursing team, specially trained in critical and intensive care, is also available 24/7 to aid in emergencies and assist with patient care.

Stroke Care

Stroke is the nation's fifth-leading cause of death and is the primary cause of adult disability. When a stroke occurs, getting expert treatment quickly is critical, as the prognosis for the patient is highly dependent on that variable. As the first and only Comprehensive Stroke Center in West Houston, the team at Memorial Hermann Memorial City is specially trained to do just that.

The hospital offers treatment for any type of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. For stroke patients, fast access to our dedicated Neuro ICU may provide improved neurological outcomes and reduce risk of long-term complications.

We have two full-time, dedicated Stroke Coordinators who help patients and family members understand clinical terms, manage treatment and post treatment expectations and foster communication with all members of the care team.

Comprehensive Stroke Center

Comprehensive Stroke Center

Memorial Hermann Memorial City has received designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center certification by DNV GL Healthcare, the highest designation for stroke care, and is the first and only Comprehensive Stroke Center on the west side of Houston. The hospital is also recognized by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Additionally, Memorial Hermann Memorial City has been recognized by the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association with the Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Silver Plus, Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll, acknowledging our commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines.

Neurological Rehabilitation

While being treated in the hospital for neurological conditions, our program provides patients rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech therapy. Early rehabilitation helps patients get back to life by improving functional ability and quality of life.

After discharge, should inpatient or outpatient rehabilitative care be needed, TIRR Memorial Hermann is continually recognized as one of America's Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report and is a national leader in medical rehabilitation and research. Core programs include rehabilitation for brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, brain and spine tumors and neuromuscular disorders. TIRR Memorial Hermann has multiple inpatient and outpatient locations throughout the Greater Houston area including TIRR Memorial Hermann Outpatient Rehabilitation – Memorial City.

Additional outpatient therapy can be accessed through Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation network with several convenient locations in West Houston.

Memorial Hermann Neurosciences Network

As part of the Memorial Hermann Health System, Memorial City Medical Center draws on the extensive clinical resources of their sister hospital at the Texas Medical Center and the highly acclaimed Mischer Neuroscience Institute. In cases where additional treatment is critical, 24/7 Life Flight transportation is available with a team that includes an EMT and nurse, both of whom are trauma-trained.

For the youngest neurology patients, treatment is coordinated with the Children’s Neuroscience Center at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. Children’s Memorial Hermann, a recognized leader in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors, also provides treatment to children with a range of neurological disorders, such as spasticity, movement disorders, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, head injuries, craniosynostosis and spina bifida.

Mischer Neuroscience Associates

The Memorial Hermann Mischer Neuroscience Institute at the Texas Medical Center extends its neuroscience expertise and capabilities through Mischer Neuroscience Associates (MNA), with outpatient clinics located across the Greater Houston area. The Institute’s infrastructure includes more than 90 nationally recognized clinicians.
