Fetal Chronic and Palliative Services

When families receive a prenatal diagnosis that their unborn baby has a complex medical or life threatening condition decisions may seem overwhelming. Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital offers the services of the CAPS team to help families plan for and cope with the remainder of their pregnancy and delivery. The CAPS team provides a compassionate program to help:

• Assist parents in creating a birth plan that is consistent with their hopes, goals, wishes and values.
• Explore treatment pathways and facilitate medical decision making.
• Offer emotional support for the entire family.
• Provide resources for coping strategies in the struggle of uncertainty.
• Continuity of care from diagnosis to discharge.

The team consists of neonatologists, nurse practitioner, nurse, social worker, child life specialist and chaplains to offer a comprehensive service that can be tailored to the special needs of each family.
