General Information

Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital provides the highest level of emergency care to children with nearly any condition, ranging from minor injuries and illnesses to major trauma. The Emergency Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital has nearly 16,000 visits per year and is a certified Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, proven capable of providing complete care for every aspect of an injury, from prevention to recovery.

The Emergency Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is a part of the Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center campus. Together, with the Emergency Center at Memorial Hermann-TMC.

The Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital Emergency Center features 15 pediatric beds and one dedicated forensic treatment room, and a complete suite of imaging with onsite MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound capabilities. Staffed by pediatric emergency medicine-trained physicians affiliated with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, and pediatric emergency nurses, the affiliated team offers pediatric care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in nearly all pediatric specialties, including, but not limited to:

In addition to the affiliated physicians and nurses, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital’s emergency team includes respiratory therapists, Child Life specialists, translation services, social work, imaging technicians, interpreter services and a comprehensive team focused on family-centered care.

Obstetrical Emergencies

The Women’s Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital provides comprehensive care for both mom and baby – even during obstetrical (OB) emergencies. The care team, affiliated with UTHealth Houston includes OB-GYN providers, labor and delivery specialists and obstetric anesthesiologists. The OB Emergency Center  is equipped to support expecting patients experiencing an OB emergency, including but not limited to, OB trauma, emergency deliveries, post-partum issues such as hemorrhaging, eclampsia, seizure, uterine rupture and more.

Pediatric Readiness

In October 2021, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital’s pediatric emergency team received a score of 100% in the Emergency Medical Services for Children Innovation and Improvement Center (EMSC) Readiness program’s pediatric readiness scoring, surpassing the national average of 71% for all participating children’s hospitals. This rating of pediatric readiness verifies that an emergency center has the right equipment, supplies, medications and training to provide high-quality emergency care for children. The scoring addresses system-level issues—policies, protocol and agreements, and not penalizing individual people or teams—that truly work to reduce morbidity and mortality for ill and injured children.

The Children's Memorial Hermann Pediatric and Neonatal Transport Team

If a child needs to be transferred to Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, our Children’s Memorial Hermann Pediatric and Neonatal Transport Team is ready. Led by affiliated pediatric and neonatal physicians experienced in critical care, the Transport Team includes nurses and respiratory therapists who provide specialized care to neonatal and pediatric patients. The Transport Team is on call 24/7  and regularly transports patients from community hospitals, community emergency centers and clinics when a higher level of care is required. The team can transport patients to the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital Emergency Center via ambulance, Memorial Hermann Life Flight® or fixed-wing air transport.
