PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency

 The PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is an ASHP-accredited one-year post-graduate residency program.

Program Goals

The PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency is designed to:

• Provide residents with experiences to develop proficiency in the medication management of patients with all types of cardiovascular diseases
• Enhance the residents' abilities to respond to cardiopulmonary arrest and other emergency situations
• Refine the skills needed of the resident to conduct quality clinical research in patients with cardiovascular diseases
• Provide opportunities for the resident to build teaching and precepting skills
• Facilitate the residents becoming competitive candidates upon graduation for a position as a cardiovascular clinical pharmacy specialist or clinical faculty member of a college of pharmacy

The Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center houses a scope of heart and vascular services that rivals the most advanced cardiovascular treatment institutions in the world. At Memorial Hermann, we pride ourselves in a pharmacy practice model that supports advanced integration of clinical pharmacy specialists within several focused clinical services practicing in the institution. This practice model fosters extensive pharmacy collaboration with both physician and nursing staff in the context of patient care, quality improvement and clinical research. The cardiology pharmacy resident will have ample opportunity to network with other residents, clinicians and academic faculty within Memorial Hermann and other Texas Medical Center institutions.

Rotations and Experiences

PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residents will be exposed to a broad range of experiences and activities intended to build the skills necessary to practice as a cardiology clinical pharmacy specialist in an acute care setting. Residents are required to complete rotations in each of the following areas:

• Orientation
• Ambulatory Cardiology
• Cardiothoracic Transplantation
• Cardiovascular Surgery ICU
• Coronary Care Unit (CCU)  I and II
• Heart Failure ICU I and II

Elective rotations which may be available based on individual resident's interests include the following areas:

• Neurovascular Diseases
• Pulmonary/Critical Care
• Emergency Medicine
• Pediatric/Congenital Cardiology
• Ambulatory Cardiology
• Cardiothoracic Transplantation
• Cardiovascular Surgery ICU
• Coronary Care Unit (ICU)
• Heart Failure ICU

Residents will gain additional experiences necessary to be a successful clinical pharmacy specialist through completion of several additional activities including but not limited to:

• Drug information
  • Drug Monograph/Formulary Management
  • Medication Use Evaluation
• Education
  • Seminar Presentation (ACPE-accredited)
  • Short Topic Presentation
  • PGY2 Topic Discussions
  • Teaching Certification Program (optional)

• A strong academic record and demonstrate a desire for professional accomplishment.
• Graduate of an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy with a Pharm.D. degree.
• Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency.
• Eligibility for licensure as a pharmacist in Texas

  • All residents MUST be licensed within 60 days of the residency start date.

• Letter of Intent
  • Should be 1 to 2 pages, using a 12-point font and 1 inch margins.
  • The letter of intent is your chance to tell us who you are and to highlight the unique skills and experiences which set you apart from other residency candidates. We would like to know what your motivation is for doing a residency and what you are expecting to get out of a residency. What can you bring to our institution and how do you plan to contribute to the care of our patients? What areas of practice interest you, and what are your goals after you complete a PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency?
• Curriculum Vitae
  • Please include a list of all completed APPE rotations, all completed and anticipated PGY1 residency rotations, along with a brief description of the setting and activities performed on each rotation.
  • Please provide contact information (either a phone number or email address) for the primary preceptor of each completed residency rotation.
• Three Letters of Reference
  • Only the PhORCAS standardized reference form is required.
  • Two reference letters should be written by previous preceptors and one by the current/former residency program director.
• College of Pharmacy Transcripts
  • Should be submitted directly to PhORCAS

Application deadline is January 2nd

Applicants considered for a position will be invited for an on-site interview at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center during January or February. Applicants will be given a tour of the facilities and will have a chance to meet with the Residency Program Director, clinical pharmacy staff, and current pharmacy residents.
