HUMBLE, TEXAS (October 13, 2015)

Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital will increase capacity and elevate patient care with a $2.93 million, 25-bed dedicated observation unit that will be ready for operation in spring 2016.

Observation units are designated areas where a patient can be observed while the decision to discharge or admit is made based on their condition. An observation unit is traditionally used to help in determining the course of treatment and diagnosis, and as a site to administer and monitor response to treatment.

“After careful evaluation, we decided that an observation unit would increase efficiency in the management of our patients who require observation,” said Memorial Hermann Northeast Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Nikki Roux, RN, JD.

Patients who are typically placed in observation require additional monitoring following a procedure or emergency department visit to determine if they need to be admitted for a higher level of care or if their condition permits them to go home.

“The unit will help provide the right level of care at the right time for our patients,” Roux said. “We will be able to maximize efficiency while maintaining a continuum of expert care that meets the specific needs of patients who may not require an extended hospital stay.”

The new unit, which is currently under construction, lies adjacent to the Memorial Hermann Northeast Emergency Department and lab services.

“The location of the observation unit allows an easy transition for patients and staff from emergent care to observation,” Roux said. “Our hospital will essentially grow in capacity and further enhance the quality of care for patients.”

The observation unit will require an additional staff of approximately 40, including 30 dedicated nurses. The hiring process to fill those spots has already begun.
